A reading group activity was to write a narrative based upon the Nintendogs after the students had been playing it and blogging about what they had been doing. They then had to take the photos and create a movie using Photostory.

Red Groups Nintendogs

Today we did lots of things with our dogs. On our dogs we:
- washed
- walked
- fed
-played
-brushed
- changed clothes

We made a list of the things that we done with our dogs. We drawed pictures of our dogs and we wrote the list of words on our picture.

Subtraction and Calendar Education with the Wii

Today was Wii Wednesday in which the class take part in Wii Fit to further not only their knowledge of healthy exercises and living options, but to also work on some simple numeracy concepts.

Calendar Education
Using the Wii Fit menu the students every week focus on the calendar page for 5-10 minutes. We discuss the current date/day/month but also discuss months before/after, select random dates and then figure out what the day of that date is etc. Lately the students have had trouble finding the final date of a month and figuring out where the next month begins. Some students think that they automatically revert back to Sundays, but after today's great responses I am hoping that with a continued effort both at school and home (for those who have Wii Fit) that there will be growth in this area of learning from using the Wii Fit calendar.

Subtraction Bowling
This week's numeracy focus is subtraction or in simpler terms, count back. The students have been taught that when faced with a problem to place the bigger number in their head and count back from that using the smaller amount. Today we used Wii Sports, in particular the bowling function to work on completing simple count back problems quickly. Every time someone bowled the bowling ball at the pins and knocked some down the game was paused and the students had to quickly calculate how many pins were left by subtracting the amount knocked down from ten. After a few goes, they began to remember simple tens facts such as 10-8 is 2. I am looking forward to teaching tens facts soon, to not only use this activity again but to see if they can remember some facts learnt today.

DS Subtraction
Today's small group focus during numeracy focused on count back. The students I worked with were orally provided different count back problems and they then had to submit their answers via the Pictochat function. A great quick way to not only get them engaged in the activity, but they also had to ensure that the formation of their letters was correct and that their direction went the wrong way.

Parental Involvement
It is also great to see the positive comments on the blog from parents. Keep them coming! These activities can be used at home too to further your student's learning. It is also fantastic to see the students turning up to school early, I think nearly 90% of students were at school 20 minutes early today to practise their spelling using the DS consoles! Well done guys!!

Pictochat Spelling Test, Maths Trainer & Nintendogs

Well today went very well which was another positive step forward in this project! I had more students bring in their own DS's to use, which was great as I had all but 2 or 3 students using a DS today!

Pictochat Spelling Test
I used the Pictochat function today for spelling tests on individual students which assisted them in seeing where their mistakes were when they misspelled words. I told them what word from their level to spell, they then wrote it on the pictochat screen and sent it back to me. Whenever there was an error I sent back the correct spelling and they then revised that word 5 times which worked well. They all now know how to apply this activity to their practicing at home (if they have a DS)

Maths Trainer
The wet weather was a blessing in disguise today as when the students came in they all wanted to practice their spelling on the DS's Pictochat function. After 10 minutes into Wet Weather timetable they all complete the 100 Cell subtraction game in Professor Kageyama's Maths Trainer, working on their count back skills. I couldn't believe that they preferred to practice their spelling and count back strategies rather than other random activities that they usually opt to do during Wet Weather.

Nintendogs
I had a group using Nintendogs today during reading groups, and they had to care for their dog, interact with it then complete their own post on the blog which they have completed. It was a great way to get the students learning about responsible pet ownership and care, but also introducing them into the world of communicating with the wider community via this blog.

Mr Curran's Reflection

Well the first day using the DS's in class went really well. Three students brought their own in to use which was great (more to come hopefully!), with parents signing them in on the class registration form. The students used the DS's in reading groups and in a maths groups today. The activity and reflection of the reading group activity is listed in the post prior to this one, and the maths reflection is below. I encountered a problem with Nintendogs today however, as I had not realised that the data is saved on the individual cartridges rather than the DS consoles themselves, so my aim now is to get a couple more Nintendogs cartridges to use for the kids to care for and learn about the responsibility that comes with pet ownership.

Very, very happy with the kids so far and their response to using the DS. This morning we discussed some rules about using the DS and Wii's and then developed a class Code of Cooperation that they all have signed and displayed in the room to ensure fair gameplay, safety and gameplay takes place.

During our numeracy session based upon count back (subtraction) I had two groups working - one using playing cards and 9 using the DS's and Professor Kageyama's Maths Trainer, completing the subtraction problems in the 100 Cell game. Initially some kids had problems with how to complete it but after a few minutes they got the hang of it. Surprisingly the first two students that finished had never touched a DS before which demonstrated how easy they are to use. The students also used the count back strategy (bigger number in my head and then count back) for each problem which also demonstrated that they were selecting the correct strategy to complete the problems.

Very, very happy with todays results! Looking forward to tomorrow!

1A Pictochat Spelling Test

Today the students used the Pictochat function in Reading groups to practice their spelling words from the M100W list. The lesson was teacher led for ten minutes to introduce the students who had never experienced using a DS before to the functions of Pictochat and how to send, type etc. I then let the students partner up, one read the words while the other typed it into Pictochat and they then led some peer discussions and assessment on spelling practices! The students who had never used a DS before were very excited and were very engaged in using them!

Student Reflection
We did some writing on Pictochat and we need to write the green words that the teacher says and we quickly type the words and press send. The teacher then checks it to see if it is spelt right.
